Japanese Scholarships for Foreign Students

About Japanese-funded foreign students

The number of foreign students who can afford to pay the costs of travelling to Japan, entrance fees, tuto fees and costs of living for examinations and entrance is probably very few. Furthermore, we do not recommend foreign students to combine work and study in order to pay these costs. Here we provide a basic explanation of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology national scholarships for foreign students who study with Sokendai.

There are two ways for foreign students outside Japan to apply for Japanese scholarships. One is getting a recommendation by embassy, and the other is getting a recommendation by university.

I. Recommendation by embassy

Japanese universities and consulates in foreign countries carry out recruitment and testing, and recommend foreign students for scholarships to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

  1. Embassy recommendation (type: foreign research student)
This includes research students entering master’s degree, doctoral, and five-year Ph.D. courses. Applications are received in March, and students come to Japan in April of the following year, guided by embassies in various countries.

II. Recommendation by university

Sokendai will recommend a few students for the Japanese government scholarship.

  1. Special Recommendation for the International Graduate Course
In the school of High Energy Accerelator Science, two places are available for students who passed the exam for the International Graduate Course. This does NOT include preceding period of Japanese language training or research studentship.
Application period is from December to January, and entrance is in October.
See also The International Graduate Program.
  2. Recommendation based on JSPS Core Unviersity Program
As a procedure of Sokendai, the three departments of KEK can recommend at most one person for the Japan-China core high energy physics doctoral degree program (including the prior research studentship), but there is no fixed number of places.
Japanese language training and research studentships are available.
Application is from December to January, and entrance is in October.
  3. General Recommendation
    (Type: foreign research student)
This includes those applying for the master’s course, doctoral degree course, and five-year Ph.D. course. Japanese language training and research studentships are available. Application is from December to January, and entrance is in October.

It is not possible to simultaneously apply for both recommendation by embassy and recommendation by university.
